What happens after hydroseeding?

Your site has been carefully prepared and professionally hydroseeded. Now it's time to give your new lawn the best opportunity to establish successfully.

The first few weeks matter most

The establishment period plays one of the biggest roles in the long-term success of your lawn. During this time, the goal is simple: keep the growing conditions as consistent as possible while allowing the young grass to establish without unnecessary disturbance. We'll provide practical aftercare advice specific to your project before we leave, so you'll know exactly what your new lawn needs.

Watering your new lawn

Consistent watering is one of the most important parts of successful lawn establishment. During germination, the hydroseed should be kept consistently moist. Rather than watering heavily once a day, it's usually better to water lightly and more frequently to prevent the surface from drying out.

As your lawn establishes, watering then becomes less frequent but longer (deeper) cycles which encourage stronger root growth.

When should I mow?

One of the most common questions we're asked is "When can I mow my new lawn?"

Wait until the grass is tall enough to require mowing (100MM) and the ground is firm enough that the mower won't damage the young plants or leave tracks in the surface. For the first mow, remove no more than the top third of the grass blade using sharp and cleaned mower blades. Regular mowing after establishment encourages the lawn to become thicker and healthier.

Is this normal?

Every lawn establishes at its own pace. It's completely normal to notice:

  • Grass germinating over several days or weeks

  • The mulch gradually breaking down as the lawn establishes

  • Some areas establishing faster than others

  • The lawn becoming thicker as it matures

The key is patience. Healthy lawns develop over time, not overnight.

Ongoing Lawn Care

Once your lawn is established, regular maintenance will help keep it healthy and looking its best.

This includes:

  • Watering during extended dry periods

  • Regular mowing

  • Seasonal fertilising

  • Controlling weeds before they become established

With regular maintenance, your lawn will continue to strengthen and mature for years to come.
